The pain is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, this is often caused by different things, but there is one thing which is certain; muscles pulling and placing extra pressure on your back is not going to help.

To identify the true center of your problem you will need to remove associated pains. As I said above, pain can result in tense muscles. For that reason you need to master relaxation.

We all think we can relax, but when you have experienced extreme pain you will also have discovered that relaxing is not that easy; it is a skill. As with most skills, you might have a natural inclination, but at the end of the day the way to achieve success is to through practice. There are many different ways to relax and different techniques, over time you will find your favorites and the ones which work best for you. I find that the beginning of yoga books tend to have lots of relaxation exercises. Obviously you have to find ones which do not really need movement as you are probably not in a fit state to tie yourself in knots at the moment; in fact any movement at all may be difficult. However, movement is not required to relax, this is as much a mental exercise as a physical one.

You may initially be taking medication two or three times a day, you need to see you relaxation the same way. Complete your chosen set of exercises at least twice a day, in case you are bed bound then you have no reason not to do them three times. The more you do these the better you will get at them and the better you will understand your pain and your back.

After a couple of days you will find that you are in the right place mentally to manage your pain and also to define it. Defining your pain is your next major step on the road to back pain relief.
