Important Information About Child Behavior Modification
Behavior in general terms can be described as a set pattern of response towards totally different environments. Though these responses are generally learnt from grown ups, these could be faulty due to positive reinforcements given by grown ups unconsciously. When parents are looking forward to the techniques of child behavior modification they have to understand the causes of some set behavioral patterns.
The first thing they need to understand is that behavior is learned via observation and experience. Kids who are in the age group of 2 to 5 start copying the adult behavioral patterns. To fully understand this type of phenomenon in general terms we just have to be perceptive about the way in which a young little girl would attempt to put her mom's lipstick or a young boy would roam about in his dad's shoes. Aside from these little behavioral patterns, there are lots of other subtle behavior patterns that the little kids adopt from their dad and mom like the way they speak, aggressive behavior patterns etc. Which sometimes are unwanted. These if not corrected could later on cause behavioral issues.
Most of the times the parents resort to punishing the kid as a tool for child behavior modification, they fail to understand that this isn't needed if they can correct the undesirable behavior of the little kid in its early stages.
To modify set behavior patterns the parents first and foremost have to fully understand the difference between reacting to the situation and being proactive to the condition and learn how to discipline your child effectively. Reaction to the situation will include angry feelings in the form of verbal sarcasm and hitting the child and even punishing the kid which might be too harsh at that moment. This type of a reaction could actually leave a scar on the kid's mind forever. Being proactive to the situation will mean disapproving the kid's conduct and helping him understand as to why it has been disapproved.
Another strategy to modify child behavior problems is the technique of reward and punishment which could be very helpful in changing the child's behavior when used in the proper way. When the child tries to correct his behavior he ought to be given a positive reward which might be in the form of appreciation, a little present or perhaps a pat on the back. This sends the message to the child that a specific behavior is acceptable. While the undesirable behavior may be ignored, verbally not approved or even a little scolding can have the impact but this should follow right away after the undesirable behavior. This would make the child understand that that very behavioral pattern is not really acceptable of him.
The mother and father should also learn to differentiate between the kid and his unwanted behavior pattern. While disapproving the undesirable behavior the mother and father must be very cautious that they don't convey either verbally or in action that they do not love the child. This could really damage the kid's self-esteem and instead of improving it could actually make the kid stubborn. Once the parents are able to easily communicate the disapproval of the behavior and their love for the kid, they will be able to easily complete the task of child behavior modification.
