If you want to learn to speed read you can. It doesn't need to be expensive, but you will have to put aside plenty of time to perfect the expertise you learn.
When a kid learns to read they begin by recognising the letters and then they make sounds and words with these. From this stage they then learn to read the sentences by moving their eyes across the page from left to right. If you wish to speed read you need to break this practice and learn a new method of reading.
To successfully learn to speed read you must be able to grab an entire line and process it at once. This sounds difficult, but with exercise it can become second nature. If you're driving behind a lorry and you see the words 'long vehicle' on the back of it, you don't in fact read them you recognise them. This is a very basic form of what you are going to learn to do.
There're several ways which you have to master. Firstly you will have to find a few text to practice with. Before you do something else you will need a pencil, ruler and white piece of paper.
Now sketch a line down the middle of the text in pencil. That is the line our eye must follow down the page. Since you're training your brain to absorb the text as lines not words, you wish to be able to focus the mind on one line at a time.
Place your empty piece of paper over the text so that only the top line is showing. Now focus on the pencil line you've drawn. If you're lucky you may have read one word, the word which your line goes through. Suppose that you have simply absorbed the whole of the understanding of that line of text. Astonishing isn't it. This is the way many people now read.
There're several courses available on methods to speed read, some are great, but the rest may teach you nothing. The best courses will be ones which will go through the techniques with you. When you learn to speed read the course is sometimes as good as the people attending. If the course is targeted at people who're driven and keen to learn then the lecturer would be keen to teach them. If it is an introductory course you may discover that at the end of it your knowledge of the skills is barely improved at all.
A helpful method to choose the greatest course to learn to speed read is to look at who the advertising is targeting. It's also a good idea to select a course which offers a few pre course preparation. This may only be reading a few background on the lecturers or even doing some tests to establish your current reading speed. The important thing is that many people are put off by having to work, so if the course requires work up front it'll be a way to discard those who're not actually interested in learning.
